Action in the he 2nd edition of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) President’s Cup were wrapped up on Sunday, at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval in Lagos, with all three teams – Warriors, Eagles, and Kings finishing the round-robin stage with one win apiece.
But ultimately, the Warriors who prevailed as the champions, by edging out the other 2 teams, on Net Run Rate (NRR) after three highly competitive encounters.
In Match 1: the Warriors XI won the toss and elected to field. While the Eagles mustered 71 all out in 16.1 overs, the Warriors had 72/6 out in 13 overs, and won by 4 wickets.
Match No.2 again pitted the Warriors against the Kings, and the Kings who elected to bat having won the toss, won it by 19 runs; and Match No.3 featured the Kings vs the Eagles, who won it by 6 wickets.
With a win each, all teams tied on points at the end of the one-legged round-robin phase, the title was decided by Net Run Rate, and it went to the Warriors, who topped the standings, thanks to their dominant victory in Match No.1, and competitive performances in Match No.2.
Individual Awards, for best Best Batter went to Elijah Jimmy for making 57 runs across two innings, and showing consistency and class with the bat.
Best Bowler award went to Azeez W arees for his standout performance, which saw him grab 5 wickets in two matches.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Moshood, a livewire in the field with 4 dismissals, was named Best Batter, that’s for impactful play during crucial moments; and Danladi Isaac was voted the
MVP of the Tournament for his all-round contributions and game-changing presence across matches.
The President’s Cup is a novelty, that continues to serve as a platform for elite-level performances and selection opportunities, while according the players the opportunity to showcase the depth of talent in Nigeria’s cricket landscape.
The NCF organizers believe the 2nd edition did not only entertain, it also provided critical match-time experience for players ahead of upcoming international engagements.
President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Dr. Uyi Akpata, was on hand, to commend the teams for being competitive, and discipline, and added that the tournament remains a window to identifying future national team prospects, and foster high-level competition within the country.
“We are impressed by the talent on display and the commitment from the players and coaches. Tournaments like this continue to build the bridge between grassroots development and national team excellence,” – Dr. Akpata stated.
With Nigeria preparing for key international assignments, the President’s Cup has served as a vital preparation ground. The NCF remains committed to using such platforms to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in global cricket.
