Cholera Outbreak: Masterguide Schools Take Awareness Campaign To Lagos Streets

Pupils, students, teachers and staff of Masterguide Schools, Egbeda, Lagos on Friday took a long walk through major streets in their neighbourhood to spread awareness about the dangers of cholera.
The community awareness walk, which was led by Masterguide College principal, Mr Olufemi Oluyinka, saw the entourage distribute educative leaflets, speak on microphone about cholera and engage in one-on-one discussions with people on various streets.
They also stopped by at many houses to talk with shop owners, traders, passers-by and neighbours, with the school bus also carrying a public address system from which one of the teachers spoke extensively about the dangers of cholera.
A common refrain stressed by the teacher during the almost two hours walk was: ‘There is danger in Cholera; it is spreading like wildfire, don’t let it put you asunder.’
The delegation also spoke about causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention of cholera, while harping on the fact that it is a stomach ailment spread by flies landing on uncovered food or by someone drinking contaminated water.
The delegation of over 50 people was met on their return to the school’s premises at Olugbede Street, off Orelope Road, Egbeda by their proprietress, Mrs Ngozi Ogbonna, who thanked them all for embarking on the mission without any complaint.
She added that it was a normal part of the annual community reachout efforts undertaken by the primary and college sections of Masterguide Schools, in support of their corporate social responsibility.
“I am happy for what you have all done for the school today,” said the esteemed educator, who is also the immediate past chairperson of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Alimosho chapter.
Ogbonna added: “Today’s impact is not only for us at Masterguide Schools, but for every street and house you touched in our neighbourhood and beyond.
“With your flyers, banners, voices, and appearances, you have been able to remind the public about the dangers of cholera and how to avoid being a victim.
“You have also taken a major step forward in learning how to be responsible boys and girls, effective leaders of tomorrow and lovers of your country.
“I also thank all the teachers and non-teaching staff, who walked for almost two hours to spread this message on behalf of the school. You touched many lives that may have died through ignorance about this deadly disease.”
She used the opportunity to remind them about preparations for the school’s 30th anniversary celebrations in October and urged all hands to be on deck towards making it another successful event for the school.
Students in the college section then gathered in the hall for their weekly fellowship, which was laced specially with love feast, as coordinated by the chaplain and head of commercial department, Mr Ayodeji Dada.
