A new Head of Sports has been announced for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Headquarters, to help drive the regeneration process in the Directorate, as envisioned by the Director General, Mohammad Bulama.

He is Chinedum Ernest Ohanusi, whose appointment follows the return of Mr. Salem Akindele-Rock to the Sports and Outside Broadcast Directorate, as Acting Director.

Chinedum, a seasoned sports journalist of repute, joined Kapital 92dot9 FM Abuja (a stable of Radio Nigeria), as pioneer Head of Sports, a position he held for eighteen (18) unbroken years, before he was fished out in March 2020 by former Director General of the corporation, Mansur Liman to move over to the Headquarters, and help in reinvigorating the newly created Directorate of Sports and OB, content wise.

Ohanusi, a man of many caps in football and sports as a whole, was a referee in the Nigeria Premier Football League for eight and half seasons, having started as a football arbiter in training (1988), and retired prematurely in 2005, due to health concerns.

But his love for the game and all of sports, saw him turn to journalism and sports punditary, first with Abuja Today, then briefly with the Champion Newspaper; before taking his present appointment with Radio Nigeria in April 2003.

As a referee, Ohanusi rose to be Council Secretary, and till date is hailed as a “Super Secy”; and as Sports Journalist, he was a one-term Secretary of the FCT Chapter of the Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria (SWAN) between 2009 and 2012, when he left with his head held high.

His time as Head of Kapital Sports, and till date is ladened with a number of big names he mentored to become even more accomplished broadcast journalists.

Married with children, the 58-year-old Ohanusi has among others covered the following international tournaments;
The annual ECOWAS Sponsored African Traditional Wrestling Championships (TOLAC) in Niamey, Niger Republic (2008-2010). 2006 Afcon finals in Egypt; 2008 Afcon finals in Ghana; and the African Games hosted by Mozambique in 2011.

“To me the appointment is just a wake up call, to be more deliberate and dedicated to the task of reinvigorating the ideals Radio Nigeria was once known for. It’s a tall order, but with the zeal and passion shown by our new headship, Mr. Akindele-Rock, and all other Operatives; let me say to many it’s an improbable task, but to us we see only the possibilities, Jehovah being our helper”.
