The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has finally handed out sanctions following the chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and Morocco. The match, which was marred by controversy, saw Senegal emerge victorious with a 1-0 win in extra time.

Morocco’s appeal to be declared AFCON champions has been rejected by CAF. Instead, the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has been slapped with fines totaling $315,000. These fines include $200,000 for the misconduct of stadium ball boys, $100,000 for players and staff invading the VAR review area, and $15,000 for fans’ use of lasers.

Additionally, Moroccan players Achraf Hakimi and Ismaël Saibari have received suspensions. Hakimi has been suspended for 2 CAF matches, with 1 match suspended for 1 year, while Saibari has been suspended for 3 CAF matches and fined $100,000.

Senegal, on the other hand, has been fined a total of $615,000. The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has been fined $300,000 for supporters’ improper conduct, $300,000 for players and staff’s unsporting behavior, and $15,000 for five yellow card infractions in the final. Coach Pape Thiaw has been suspended for 5 CAF matches and fined $100,000, while players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr have received 2-match suspensions each .

The sanctions come after a dramatic final that saw Senegal’s players walk off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco, leading to a 15-minute delay in the game.
