Immediate past Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom was invited and drilled by operatives of the Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Tuesday.
However, SportsDay gathered that the former governor who was invited by the EFCC last week was advised by the anti-graft agency to appear before the Zonal Commander by 10am yesterday.
Ortom who arrived the EFCC office at about 10:09am on Tuesday was directed to head to the office of the Zonal Commander.
However, as at the time of compiling this report at about 6:41pm on Tuesday, the former Governor was still being interrogated by the anti-graft agency.
Reacting to the incident, the Benue State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed Ortom for voluntarily making himself available to the EFCC, describing his action as exemplary.
Bemgba Iortyom, State Publicity Secretary of the party who disclosed this in a statement that was made available to newsmen in Makurdi on Tuesday said Ortom has submitting himself to the agency to answer questions surrounding his eight year tenure as governor in the state.
He particularly noted that the case of Ortom was different in the sense that it was devoid of the rancour and acrimony that usually greets such appearances.
According to Iortyom, “PDP in Benue State commends former governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, for voluntarily submitting himself to answer questions about his eight years tenure in office before the EFCC.
“The former governor’s action also depict him as a man of his words as it fulfills promises he made while in office that at the end of his tenure he will be willing to give open account of all that he did in execution of the mandate vested to him as governor by the Benue electorate.
“PDP notes that while this won’t be the first time a former governor will be answering questions before the anti graft body, Ortom’s case is remarkably distinct for the lack of rancour and acrimony which usually attends such appearances.
“The party is satisfied that Ex-Governor Ortom’s conduct is a clear reflection of his having no skeletons in his cupboard which he should be running away from, as “only the guilty usually are afraid”, he stated. End.
