D’Tigress lost the first quarter 21-26 to the Aigllons of Mali at the Palais des Sports in Treichville; but fought-back to win the 2nd period, and went to the break level on 41-41 baskets.

The reigning champions then won the 3rd and 4th quarters, against the resilient Malian ladies, to seal the historic 75-58 win, and a memorable “five-peat”.

In their congratulatory message, NAWIS the umbrella body that sees to the welfare and well-being of former and active Sports women in Nigeria; noted that winning a 5th straight title, was very remarkable and an incredible feat.

“It is a testament to the team’s dedication, perseverance, and exceptional skills. We commend the players, coaches, and entire support staff for their tireless efforts in bringing glory to Nigeria”, President of NAWIS Professor Adefunke Mariam Suleiman said.

The statement also quoted the founder of NAWIS, Professor Emeritus Bola Adeyanju as saying “D’Tigress has consistently demonstrated their dominance in Africa.

We strongly believe this and eye-catching victory, the Sterling qualities of Coach Rena Wakama, back-to-back Amy Okonkwo, and Sarah Ogoke who was rushed back to play, less than a year after child birth, and the one churned out by the Super Falcons, will inspire a new generation of young Nigerian athletes, while captivating millions of sports loving Nigerians”.

Both women added that the exploits of D’Tigress, and winning a 7th African title overall, is a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, teamwork, and determination; and thanked the Presidency for the honour bestowed on the teams, as well as the rewards and encouragement the players received.

“We are proud to see Nigerian athletes excel on the international stage, and we look forward to seeing D’Tigress continue to make history and bring pride to our great nation, at the global stage”, they signed out.
