Arsenal secured a 1–0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final encounter, with a late goal providing the decisive outcome.
The fixture began with limited attacking fluency from both sides, as defensive organisation restricted clear opportunities. The first notable attempt came from Maxi Araújo, whose left-footed strike was tipped onto the crossbar by David Raya.
Arsenal’s initial attacking involvement remained minimal, with Viktor Gyökeres closely monitored and prevented from advancing into dangerous positions. Noni Madueke later attempted to score directly from a corner, but his effort struck the crossbar.
Sporting CP adjusted their defensive structure by deploying a deeper back line whenever Arsenal progressed forward, reducing space in central areas. As a result, Luis Suárez had limited involvement in attacking phases, while overall entries into Arsenal’s penalty area remained low.
Arsenal delivered several crosses through Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard, but none resulted in a clear scoring opportunity before halftime.
Following the restart, Declan Rice played a key role in disrupting Sporting’s forward movements by regaining possession repeatedly in midfield. A set-piece effort from Martin Ødegaard required intervention from Rui Silva, while Francisco Trincão tested David Raya at the opposite end.
Midway through the half, Martín Zubimendi found the net from distance, but the goal was disallowed after a review confirmed an offside infringement in the build-up.
Sporting continued to threaten intermittently, with Geny Catamo forcing a one-handed save from David Raya, preserving parity.
The decisive goal arrived in stoppage time. Gabriel Martinelli delivered a low pass into the penalty area, which was met by Kai Havertz. Havertz completed the move with a controlled finish, beating Rui Silva to give Arsenal the lead.
