Tobi Amusan delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra after storming to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday.

The reigning world record holder produced another commanding performance to claim her third straight African title in the event, having previously won in Asaba in 2018 and Mauritius in 2022. After setting the pace in both the heats and semi-finals, Amusan powered through the final in 12.83 seconds to finish comfortably ahead of the field.

Despite delays caused by technical issues with the stadium timing system, there was little doubt about the outcome as the Nigerian star once again proved her dominance on the continental stage. Speaking after the race, Amusan said securing the victory was more important to her than the finishing time.

Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish in the race as Adaobi Tabugbo claimed bronze with a time of 13.26 seconds — her first individual senior international medal. Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller took silver in 13.24 seconds.

The triumph lifted Team Nigeria’s spirits on Day 2 of the championships, with the country later adding another gold medal in the mixed 4x400m relay through the combined efforts of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George.
