The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally announced that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, set to be co‑hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, will now kick off in August rather than the originally slated February.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe explained that the decision followed “extensive consultations” with stakeholders and a clear need to give the three East‑African nations a broader window to meet the tournament’s logistical, infrastructural and financial demands.
“After careful consideration of the host countries’ requirements, we concluded that moving the competition to August will provide them with the extra months needed to invest in stadiums, transport networks and other essential services,” Motsepe said. “This additional preparation time will help ensure a smoother, higher‑quality event for players, officials and fans alike.”
The shift also aims to align AFCON with the global football calendar, reducing clashes with Europe’s club season and easing player‑release pressures. By placing the tournament in mid‑year, CAF hopes to attract stronger squads, boost broadcast appeal and secure more commercial partnerships.
Motsepe praised the current edition of AFCON, noting the high level of competition and the quality of refereeing. He highlighted the presence of world‑renowned stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Zinedine Zidane and Jules Koundé, underscoring how African football is gaining ever‑greater international visibility and inspiring young talent across the continent.
CAF remains committed to continuously raising the standard of the Africa Cup of Nations, with the August 2027 edition expected to showcase improved infrastructure, heightened organization and a showcase of African football at its best.
