The 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championship is set to kick off in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, on July 16, 2025. As at 6:13 pm on July 14, 2025, the protocol team has received 33 African countries participating in the event. The championship will run from July 16 to 20 at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.

Some of the countries that have arrived in Abeokuta include :
– South Sudan: Their team has arrived in Abeokuta, adding to the excitement of the championships.
– Seychelles: Athletes from Seychelles have also touched down, ready to compete against the best young athletes in Africa.
– Egypt: A contingent of 43 athletes from Egypt has arrived, showcasing the country’s rich athletic talent.
– Congo: The DR Congo athletes were warmly received and swiftly processed upon arrival.
– Algeria: Although initially withdrawn as the host, Algeria’s team has also arrived to participate.
– Ghana: Ghanaian athletes are among the participants, vying for top honors.

The championships will feature various track and field events, including :

– 100m and 400m Finals: Both U18 and U20 categories will compete in these events.

– Long Jump and High Jump: Athletes will showcase their skills in these technical events.

– Relay Events: The 4x100m relay finals for U20 men and women are highly anticipated.

– 5000m Final: This event promises to be thrilling, with athletes pushing themselves to the limit.

The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has praised Nigeria for hosting the championships despite the short notice. CAA President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, expressed admiration for the Nigerian government’s support and the Ogun State government’s readiness to host the event ⁴. The CAA is determined to regularly organize these championships to give young athletes opportunities to showcase their talents.
