Reign Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Rivers United, defeated Bendel Insurance 2-1 in to end their 26 games unbeaten streak in the Nigerian topflight, in Lagos at the ongoing Championship Playoff.

Stanley Eguma’s men who have not  lost any match in the NPFL Championship Playoff at the Mobolaji Johnson (MJ) Arena, Onikan, Lagos, claimed a 2-1 win over Insurance courtesy of goals from Maurice Chukwu and Onoja Joseph.

Prior to today’s fixture, the Edo-based team failed to record a win in their last three games played at the championship,  but still maintained their undefeated run in the league.

There was no plenty of actions from from both teams in the first half but Rivers United make some statement, as they registered the first goal in the added time of the matchup, with Maurice Chukwu finding the back of the net.

The reigning league champions doubled their lead in the second minute of the stoppage time, following a neat finish from Onoja Joseph, who came in to replace Ukeme Davies in the 80th minute.

With few minutes to end match, Divine Nwanchukwu popped up and bagged his third goal in four matches at the championship, this reducing his team’s deficit with a lovely header.

As it stands now Rivers United are still maintaining the top spot on the table with eight points from four games, while Insurance are fourth on the log with three points.
