Former world record slayer Henry Rono passed away at the age of 72, barely three days after he celebrated his birthday. This is coming after the death of Kelvin Kiptum, a world record holder in distance race, who died from car crash.

Rono was renowned for setting four world records in 3,000m, 5,000m, 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase within 81 days in year 1978.

Rono won two gold medals for Kenya in 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase events at 1978 African Games in Algeris and he followed it up with another two gold medals in 5000m and 3000m steeplechase at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

The athletics icon was reported to have been in a Nairobi hospital, receiving treatment in the last 10 days before passing away on Thursday.

Athletics Kenya confirmed Rono’s death with a glowing tribute to the country’s legend.

Rono’s death came at a time when Kenya is mourning world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum who died in car accident alongside his Rwandan coach in western Kenya on Sunday night.
