The 2nd Niger Delta Games in Benin City, Edo State, witnessed a standout performance by 13-year-old Hephzibah Okon, who dazzled spectators with her exceptional skill in the women’s 800 meters race. Representing Akwa Ibom State, Okon clinched gold with a remarkable time of 2:18.83, outpacing more experienced runners from Cross River and Delta States, who settled for silver and bronze respectively.

Coached by her father, Coach Filipidis, a former athlete himself, Okon’s victory was a testament to her dedication and natural talent. She showcased impressive stamina and tactical awareness, maintaining a steady pace before unleashing a strong finish on the home straight.

In a post-race interview, Okon dedicated her win to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, her coaches, and sports administrators, acknowledging their unwavering support. “This gold is not just mine, it’s for everyone who believed in me,” she said, hinting at bigger ambitions, including national and international competitions.

Okon’s performance has put the spotlight on her burgeoning career, and with her talent and drive, she’s poised to become a force to reckon with in Nigerian athletics.
