_Sets New Standard for Road Racing in Nigeria._

The maiden edition of the Yenagoa City International 10km Race has ended on a resounding high, earning widespread acclaim as a landmark sporting event and setting a new benchmark for the organisation and delivery of road races in Nigeria.
Following months of meticulous planning and strategic coordination, the race delivered a seamless, world-class experience, drawing commendation from stakeholders across the sports ecosystem.
The race, flagged off by the Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, witnessed outstanding performances from elite athletes, with Ethiopia’s Habtamu Birhane Molla clinching victory in the men’s category with an impressive time of 29:23.62. Nigeria’s Gang James finished second in 29:59.90, while Francis James secured third place in 30:16.71.
The women’s race was dominated by Ethiopian athletes, as Shewaye Dueo Tolosa emerged winner with a time of 33:50.07. Tigist Girma Aseta placed second in 34:07.25, while Worke Gacasho Jilo finished third in 34:57.72.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Arise Television, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade of Nilayo Sports Management underscored the extensive preparation behind the event’s success, noting that its delivery was driven by deliberate collaboration, precision planning, and a shared vision among stakeholders.
“This historic race, the first of its kind in Bayelsa State under our organisation, represents a defining moment in the evolution of road racing in Nigeria. It also provided a fitting platform to celebrate International Women’s Day and recognise the invaluable contributions of women in sports development and leadership,” she stated.
Mrs. Olopade also expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering support and commitment to the success of the event.
Representing the Governor, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe delivered a goodwill message to organisers, athletes, and officials, describing the race as a major milestone in the state’s sporting journey. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sports development, particularly initiatives that empower youth and promote healthy living.
He further urged athletes to draw inspiration from Olympic champion and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, encouraging them to pursue excellence with discipline and determination.
Dr. Akpe disclosed that over 1,000 Bayelsans participated in the race, describing the turnout as a strong indicator of the state’s growing sports culture and grassroots engagement.
Also speaking, Kola Daniel, Media Aide at the National Sports Commission (NSC), commended the leadership synergy between NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, describing it as a “Midas touch” driving a new era of growth and transformation in Nigerian sports. He noted that their efforts align with the Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning the sector for greater global competitiveness.
All podium finishers received prize money of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 for first, second, and third places respectively in both categories, while the top Bayelsan finishers smiled home with a cash prize of one million naira.
The successful hosting of the Yenagoa City International 10km Race reinforces Bayelsa State’s emergence as a prime destination for major sporting events and underscores the growing role of sports in driving community engagement, youth development, and international recognition.
