The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has told member-associations that their football clubs, especially those participating in inter-club competitions, must have women club.

A top official of CAF, who does not want to be quoted since he is not mandated to speak on the issue, confirmed to Sports Village Square that beginning with the 2023/24 editions of the CAF Champions League and the Confederation the clubs must have a women’s football team or else they cannot get the license to take part in the competition.

A memo regarding this has been sent to NFF and other CAF affiliates since June 5. It was signed Raul Chipenda, Technical Development Director.

The deadline set by CAF for the club licensing is 30 June.

This is going to affect the Nigerian clubs that have qualified for the inter clubs.

Both Enyimba and Remo Stars are to feature in the CAF Champions League while Rivers United will play in the Confederation Cup along with either Bendel Insurance or Enugu Rangers who will next week play the Federation Cup final.

The official told Sports Village Square that the clubs may be allowed to adopt an existing women’s club.

That becomes easy for the Rivers State run Rivers United who could adopt the Rivers Angels as their women’s club.
