The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Chief Bukola Olopade, was the cynosure of all eyes at the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Novelty Match, at the ongoing 2024 Gateway Games in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The novelty match, organized by SWAN, brought together media professionals, key stakeholders, and sports enthusiasts in a spirited and symbolic football game aimed at promoting unity and celebrating the vital role of sports journalism in national development.

Chief Olopade, renowned for his dynamic leadership and deep passion for sports, graced the occasion with his trademark energy and charisma. Demonstrating his commitment to unity, he played one half for the Southern Team and the other for the Northern Team—eventually aligning with the Northern Team, who clinched a 1-0 victory.

His presence added color and prestige to the event, drawing admiration from players, spectators, and officials alike.

In his remarks, Chief Olopade commended SWAN for its unwavering dedication to the promotion of sports through credible and professional reporting.

“I had fun,” he said. “Of all the novelty matches I’ve attended, this has been the most exciting. I witnessed a strong spirit of unity and togetherness among members.”

He urged sports journalists in Nigeria to continue spotlighting sports in their coverage.

“Sports is life. It should not be relegated to the back pages or the end of news bulletins,” he emphasized. “Sports journalism is a vital pillar for the growth of Nigeria’s sports industry, and we will continue to partner with SWAN to harness the power of sports for national unity and development.”

The DG in his usual supportive style doled out 2 million naira to the two teams as their playing bonuses and incentives. He also gifted some dollars to the best Goalkeeper of the match amidst other financial incentives.

The match ended on a joyful note, filled with camaraderie, laughter, and memorable moments—truly reflecting the spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity.
