Napoli President Confirms New Contract For Captain Di Lorenzo

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed that captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo has signed a new long-term contract.

The 29-year-old Italian right back was a crucial part of Luciano Spalletti’s squad last season, playing a key role in helping to end their 33-year wait for the Scudetto.

Di Lorenzo has grown into an important leader for Napoli since his arrival from Empoli in July 2019 and was made captain last year following the departures of Lorenzo Insigne, Kalidou Koulibaly and Dries Mertens.

Speaking via Gianluca Di Marzio, De Laurentiis confirmed that Di Lorenzo had put pen to paper on a new deal with Napoli, saying: “We’re working for you, and for example today our captain has been renewed until 2029.”

The 29-year-old Italian right back underlined his happiness at the new six-year deal, which’ll expire when he’s 35.

“I didn’t expect you to announce it tonight. I wanted to thank you for this recognition, which means a lot to me.

“Then I want to thank my teammates because if I have achieved this renewal, it’s also thanks to them because we are a team and alone I would be nobody.”

In the early stages of the summer, things looked a little concerning for Napoli, with coach Luciano Spalletti and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli both departing.

There were fears that the club could be picked apart following their Scudetto success, with stars like Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia attracting attention from across Europe, but so far the only key player to leave is Kim Min-Jae, who was sold to Bayern Munich for €50m
