The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade Francis Bunu Abi praised the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Nigeria’s successful election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council category ‘C’ for 2026-2027 biennium.
The union praised the committee’s efforts, saying the feat is a milestone in Nigeria’s maritime history and a testament to the country’s commitment to IMO objectives.
MWUN also thanked the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, and the federal government for their roles in promoting Nigeria’s maritime interests.
According to a press statement by the head media-MWUN, Comrade Ikemefuna John Kennedy; The numero uno of the Maritme Workers’ Union of Nigeria, says the feat recorded so far for the country on November 28, 2025 in London, where Nigeria secured a seat on the IMO Council, was a significant impact and a milestone in the history of the country’s Maritme space and diplomatic engagements, saying it was indeed remarkable and highly commendable and worthy of national celebration.
The Maritme Workers’ Union of Nigeria President General did commend the wholesome efforts of the set committee, which were a critical factor in promoting Nigeria’s Maritme reforms and its capability on the global stage; thereby, strengthening Nigeria’s position within the international Maritme space.
However, while Comrade Bunu, PG of MWUN thanked Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy for the achieved feat, the effectiveness of the committee members cannot also be overemphasized; recalling that that visible feat reignited the country’s commitment to the objectives of the IMO and its enhanced international Maritme cooperation; whilst also thanking the federal government of Nigeria for promoting the country’s interest within the global Maritme governance.
