The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) recently honored Comrade Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), with a prestigious merit award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigerian sports.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Director General, Honourable Bukola Olopade, former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Honourable Sunday Dare, and the Special Assistant (Media) to the Director General, Mr Kola Daniel, were among the distinguished personalities honoured at the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) 60th Anniversary
Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, has been recognized for his tireless efforts in promoting grassroots sports and developing athletic talent in the country.His appointment as NIS Director General earlier this year was widely hailed by stakeholders, who praised his vision, leadership, and passion for sports development.
As NIS DG, Shaibu has promised to reorganize the institute to promote grassroots sports and prepare Nigerian athletes for podium finish at international competitions. His experience in Edo State, where he oversaw sports development and initiatives, has prepared him for this role.
Shaibu’s achievements in sports development are numerous, participated in Okpekpe international 10km road race ,a world-class event, now a gold label in 2022.
He is also credited with reviving Bendel Insurance FC and hosting one of Nigeria’s best National Sports Festivals.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and other sports organizations have congratulated Shaibu on his appointment, praising his intellect, commitment, and passion for sports development.
SWAN recognizes Shaibu’s dedication to Nigerian sports and his potential to drive positive change in the sector.
Shaibu’s award is a testament to his hard work and commitment to promoting sports in Nigeria. It is expected that his leadership at NIS will take Nigerian sports to new heights and inspire a new generation of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
