Lagos State is set to host Inaugural National Sports Commission Intermediate Games in 2026. The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced Lagos State as the host for the first edition of the National Intermediate Games, scheduled for 2026. This historic event is part of the RHINSE initiatives aimed at developing sporting talents among youths aged 16-19.
The objectives of the National Intermediate Games are :
Talent Identification: To discover and nurture budding talents through a structured grassroots model.
Pathway to Elite Sports: Provide a clear pathway for young athletes to progress to the elite level
Sustainable Success: Foster a sustainable podium success at international competitions.
According to NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko said, “We are determined to have a sustainable podium success at International competitions, but it will only come with having the right structure that can aid elite success.” The NSC is aggressively pursuing a grassroots system that will support the development of young athletes.
The bedrock of every sustained Sports development is an effective grassroots system, and this is what we are aggressively pursuing with the mandate given to us by Mr. President.”
The Director General of National Sports Commission Hon. Bukola Olopade said, “With the National Youth Games and the National Sports Festival fully established, the Intermediate Games will help bridge the gap and will give better clarity to our Grassroots development drive and will help our young athletes to have better preparations before they move to the elite level.”
Lagos State has graciously agreed to host the first edition of the National Intermediate Games, which promises to be a major milestone in Nigerian sports history. This development comes as the state continues to showcase its capabilities in hosting major sporting events.
