Former captain of the Nigerian Rugby National Team; Azeez Ladipo has been appointed to the Nigeria Olympic Committee Athletes Commission.
A statement from Dr Robinson Okosun, Chairman Media Committee, Nigeria Rugby Football Federation on Wednesday said the appointment was approved by the NOC leadership.
Robinson also quoted the NOC President, Engr Habu Ahmed Gumel, in a congratulatory message ”Your appointment is in recognition of your wealth of experience and outstanding contribution to Nigerian Sports as well as the Olympic Movement”. Engr Gumel further stated that ”It is therefore hoped that you would bring to bear your expertise and experience in achieving the goals of your commission and the NOC in general”.
Ladipo, who is of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, represented Nigeria at the West African Super 16 stage and helped Nigeria gain promotion to the main Africa Cup where the team qualified for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. He played club rugby for Cowrie Rfc and Chicago Blaze Rugby club as he continued to lead the National team out to several Africa Cup tournaments in both 15s and 7-a-side versions of the sport until 2019.
Ladipo won several medals including two silver medals in the Men’s Africa Cup 1C held in Morocco and Zambia, Dubai Sevens Plate and gold medals at the National Sports Festivals.
The athlete was appointed as General Manager of the Rugby Federation where he worked tirelessly towards the lifting of Nigeria’s ban by World Rugby in November 2022.
