Gordon’s Goal Gives Newcastle 1-0 Win Over Chelsea

Chelsea F.C. suffered a damaging setback in their push for a top-four finish after falling 1–0 to Newcastle United F.C. at Stamford Bridge, with Anthony Gordon scoring the decisive goal early in the contest.

The visitors made their breakthrough in the 18th minute following a swift attacking move. Tino Livramento burst forward through the Chelsea backline before feeding Joe Willock, who then set up Gordon to calmly finish past the goalkeeper and give Newcastle the lead.

Gordon’s goal came as a timely response after criticism surrounding his recent illness, which limited his involvement in Newcastle’s midweek UEFA Champions League encounter with FC Barcelona.

Chelsea attempted to respond and created several chances throughout the match but struggled to convert their opportunities. Despite producing 22 shots, the home side managed to hit the target only three times.

In the second half, Chelsea pushed harder for an equaliser. Substitute Liam Delap had two promising opportunities late on — first blasting a shot over the bar and later guiding a header narrowly wide.

The closest Chelsea came to scoring arrived through captain Reece James. His powerful 25-yard free kick beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the post, leaving the hosts frustrated.

Several penalty appeals also went unanswered. Cole Palmer believed he had been fouled inside the area, while Marc Cucurella appealed for handball against Sven Botman, yet the referee dismissed both claims.

The defeat means Chelsea have now gone three consecutive league matches at Stamford Bridge without a victory — their worst home run since 2023 — raising concerns about their momentum in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

For Newcastle, the win was a significant boost, and Gordon continued his impressive record against Chelsea. The winger has now contributed six Premier League goal involvements against the London club, with three goals and three assists — more than he has managed against most other opponents.
