FIFA has approved the international switch of allegiance for Arthur Okonkwo, officially making the London-born shot-stopper eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who previously featured for England across multiple youth levels, has now completed his transition to the Super Eagles, ending months of speculation about his international future.
Born to Nigerian parents in London, Okonkwo represented England from U15 through U18 between 2015 and 2019. However, with limited prospects of breaking into the senior England squad, he opted to pledge his international future to Nigeria—a move permitted under FIFA’s eligibility rules.
The decision is a significant boost for the Nigeria national football team, as they continue to strengthen their squad depth, particularly in the goalkeeping department.
Okonkwo began his career at Arsenal, rising through the club’s academy ranks before making his senior debut in a Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace in May 2021.
Despite limited first-team opportunities, the goalkeeper gained experience through loan spells with Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz.
He later moved to Wrexham ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, initially on loan before sealing a permanent transfer in 2024 following the retirement of veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Since joining Wrexham, Okonkwo has been instrumental in the club’s rapid progress, helping them secure back-to-back promotions into the Championship. This season, he has continued to impress with strong performances, recording six clean sheets in 21 league appearances.
With his nationality switch now confirmed, Okonkwo is in line for a potential call-up as Nigeria looks to reinforce its squad ahead of upcoming international competitions.
