Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the upcoming Miami Open after suffering a right shoulder injury, tournament organisers confirmed on Sunday.

The 38-year-old recently competed at Indian Wells Masters, where defending champion Jack Draper came from a set down to defeat the Serbian star on Wednesday. Djokovic also took part in the doubles event alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas in the California desert, but the pair were eliminated in the second round.

Djokovic is the most successful men’s player in the history of the Miami tournament, having won the title six times. His withdrawal means he will miss the opportunity to chase a record seventh crown. The 24-time Grand Slam champion reached the final of the Miami Open last year but finished runner-up after losing to Czech player Jakub Mensik.

The Miami Open main draw begins on Wednesday, while qualifying matches are scheduled to start on Monday.
