Coco Gauff, the 22-year-old tennis sensation, has spoken out against criticism of her natural hair in a recent Miu Miu ad campaign.
The backlash began when some social media users described her hair as “unkempt” and “messy,” prompting Gauff to take to TikTok to address the issue
In an eight-minute video, Gauff expressed her disappointment and hurt, but also used the opportunity to promote self-acceptance and celebrate Black hair. “I’m not gonna apologize for the way that my hair looked, because there are other girls who had the exact same hair as me, and I just wanted them to feel represented that your hair is literally fine the way it is,” she said.
Gauff emphasized that her natural hair was intentional, as she prefers not to slick it back due to potential damage. She also highlighted the importance of representation, stating that if her 4C hair is good enough for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu, then it’s good enough for everyone.
The tennis star’s response has garnered widespread support, with many praising her for promoting self-love and acceptance. Gauff’s message is clear: natural hair is beautiful, and everyone should feel confident in their own skin.
