Manchester United is on the verge of appointing a new interim manager, with Michael Carrick emerging as the top contender to take the reins. Carrick, a former United midfielder, has reportedly had positive talks with the club’s hierarchy, including CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Carrick’s experience as a caretaker manager at United in 2021, where he won two out of three games, has likely contributed to his strong candidacy. He’s also open to working under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his assistant, should Solskjaer be appointed.
Solskjaer, who previously managed United from 2018 to 2021, is also in the running, but Carrick seems to be gaining momentum. The club aims to announce the new interim manager within the next 24-48 hours, ahead of their Premier League derby against Manchester City on January 17.
The decision comes after Ruben Amorim’s sacking, with Darren Fletcher currently serving as interim manager. United’s recent performances, including a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, have added urgency to the search for stability .
