Borussia Dortmund have officially parted ways with sporting director Sebastian Kehl, marking a significant shift in the club’s leadership structure following a disappointing, trophyless campaign.
The Bundesliga side confirmed on Sunday that both parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate Kehl’s contract with immediate effect, describing the decision as amicable and timely ahead of the summer rebuild.
Managing director Lars Ricken explained that the move allows the club to begin restructuring early while giving Kehl the opportunity to plan his next career step. He also paid tribute to their long-standing relationship, which dates back to their playing days, including their Bundesliga title win in 2002.
Kehl, a former Dortmund captain and key figure during the club’s successful 2011 and 2012 title-winning seasons, transitioned into management in 2018. He later rose to the role of sporting director in 2022, playing a major part in shaping the club’s squad in recent years.
In his farewell message, Kehl expressed deep emotional ties to the club, describing Dortmund as a central part of his life and praising the fans, stadium atmosphere, and the iconic Südtribüne.
Internal Tensions Behind the Decision
Behind the scenes, reports suggest that overlapping responsibilities between Kehl and Ricken led to internal disagreements, ultimately influencing the decision. Kehl’s exit is expected to consolidate authority within the club’s leadership, strengthening Ricken’s role moving forward.
More Changes at Dortmund
The leadership change is part of a broader overhaul at the club. Midfielder Julian Brandt has already been confirmed to leave at the end of the season, while Salih Özcan and Niklas Süle are also set to depart when their contracts expire.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over the future of defender Nico Schlotterbeck, whose contract runs until next year.
Club captain Emre Can recently signed a one-year extension, although he will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury.
On-Field Struggles Continue
Dortmund’s struggles this season have extended beyond internal matters. The club currently sits second in the Bundesliga but trails leaders Bayern Munich by a significant margin.
Their European campaign ended in disappointment after elimination by Atalanta, while domestic cup hopes were dashed by Bayer Leverkusen.
With some changes underway, Dortmund now faces a crucial summer as they attempt to rebuild both their squad and leadership in pursuit of future success.
