Former Super Eagles’ striker, Benedict Akwuegbu has tipped the team to win this year’s edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament currently ongoing in Morocco.
The “Austrian Bomber” as he was fondly called during his playing career, made the assertion after the Super Eagles booked their quarter final ticket following an impressive 4-0 whitewash of the Black Mambas of Mozambique on Monday evening.
Akwuegbu, who is now a certified nurse in London and currently studying for his Masters degree at the Anglia Ruskin University, UK, expressed satisfaction with the display by the team, while praising them for showing their class against their weaker opponents.
“This is the kind of commanding performance we expect from the Super Eagles, begins Akwuegbu.
“They dominated their opponents from start to finish, leaving them with little or no room to operate, which is very impressive.
“It was an emphatic statement and I think I’m tipping them for the cup if they can sustain such performances in the remaining matches in the tournament, he concluded.
Nigeria will battle the winner between Algeria and DRC Congo in the quarter finals for a place in the last four.
Apart from Nigeria, hosts Morocco, Senegal, Mali, Egypt and Cameroon are the other countries which have already qualified for the last eight while the two other teams to join them will be decided Tuesday in the games between Cote d’Ivoire against Burkina Faso and Algeria versus DRC Congo.
