Team FCT has at last departed Abuja for Asaba, to take part in the 2023 National Youth Games (NYG), where they hope to continue with their usual impressive good form at successive youth games.
Although, the size of the contingent (athletes and officials) cannot be immediately ascertained; Sports Day can confirm that the youngsters are in high spirit and looking forward to doing the territory proud.
At the last edition of the NYG held in 2021, and hosted by the University of Ilorin, Kwara State; Team FCT garnered a total of 36 medals, made up of 10 Gold, 9 Silver and 17 Bronze medals; to placed 7th, overall.
Even while age cheat was deemed to be a menace, the FCT Sports Department, headed by Istifanus Luka was widely praised for being one of the contingents
that competed with athletes that were truly 15 years and under.
As a result of the unabating issue of age falsification; the Main Organising Committee (MOC) for the games, on Tuesday confirmed that stricter measures would be applied to weed out, potential age cheats.
Addressing the media in Asaba, the Vice Chairman of the MOC, who is also the General Manager of the Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobox Okowa said the first instrument for the screening will be the National ID Card (NIN).
Thereafter, birth certificates and other valid documents may apply.
According to the Assistant Director in charge of Sports Development in the FCT Sports Department, Iyoola Ogundele, “this time around, we are determined to surpass our performance, at the last edition of the youth games in Ilorin, by exceeding the ten Gold medals we won in Kwara”.
FCT will be competing in the following Sports:               Athletics, Badminton, Beach volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Karate Shooting Taekwondo, Tennis,Trado Sports and Weightlifting.
