Galatasaray might be preparing to hand Victor Osimhen the captain’s armband, marking him as the next leader of the Turkish champions if they move on from Mauro Icardi. The talk came from Turkish football commentator Ali Naci Küçük, who said the club is weighing the idea of making the Nigerian striker their new captain once a decision is made about Icardi’s future. In his words, “Galatasaray wants to give the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen if they don’t continue with Mauro Icardi.”
Osimhen’s rise at Galatasaray has been fast and undeniable. Since joining the Istanbul side, he’s become one of the team’s most decisive figures, both in the dressing room and on match days. He’s been central to their recent dominance in Turkey, helping the club lock down back-to-back Süper Lig titles and add the Turkish Cup to the trophy cabinet.
The numbers back it up too. Across multiple seasons he’s crossed the 35-goal mark, consistently coming through in big games and keeping defenders on edge with his pace, movement, and finishing. But it’s not just the goals that have won people over. Teammates, fans, and club officials have noticed his work rate, mentality, and the way he lifts the group when it matters.
That’s why the captaincy talk isn’t just about seniority or goals scored. It’s seen as a nod to the influence he already carries in the squad. If Galatasaray does go ahead with it, the armband would be formal recognition of a player who’s quickly become the heartbeat of the team.
