As Nigeria intensifies preparations toward the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the Kingsley Awodi Para Powerlifting Open Championship is stands as a symbol of private-sector support for grassroots sports development and athlete empowerment.

The championship, spearheaded by Kingsley James Awodi, CEO of Afri-Kings Homes and Properties underscores a growing commitment to creating opportunities for athletes, particularly in para sports, to showcase their talents on a national stage.

Awodi’s latest initiative, the organization of an open para powerlifting trials event, is designed to identify and nurture promising athletes while strengthening Nigeria’s competitive edge ahead of major international competitions.

The championship holding from April 30th – May 4th provides a vital platform for para athletes to gain visibility, competitive experience, and support.

This effort is consistent with Awodi’s track record of impactful contributions to sports development in Nigeria. He was a notable contributor to the “Adopt-A-Pitch” initiative, under ex Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Sunday Dare, where he single-handedly financed the re-grassing of the training pitch at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, an intervention widely praised for improving training conditions for athletes.

Beyond infrastructure, Awodi has also demonstrated a deep commitment to athlete welfare. Through his contributions to the Athletes Training Grant Purse, he has provided direct financial support to athletes, disbursing cash grants to aid their preparation for key competitions. This gesture was described by stakeholders as a timely intervention that boosts morale and performance.

With the Kingsley Awodi Para Powerlifting Open Championship, he continues to extend that support, reinforcing the importance of inclusive sports development and sustained investment in emerging talent.

As anticipation builds, the championship is expected to attract top para powerlifting athletes and serve as a critical stepping stone in Nigeria’s journey toward podium success at the Commonwealth Games
