UEFA has suspended Gianluca Prestianni for six matches after the SL Benfica winger was found guilty of discriminatory conduct during a clash with Real Madrid CF.

The incident occurred in a heated Champions League knockout play-off tie in Lisbon, where Prestianni directed abusive language toward Vinicius Junior.t inside Although early speculation suggested possible racial abuse, UEFA’s investigation concluded that the offense involved homophobic remarks. The confrontation led to a 10-minute stoppage as officials activated anti-discrimination procedures.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed the sanction, stating that Prestianni will serve a total of six matches. However, half of the ban—three games—has been suspended for two years on probation. This means any repeat offense within that period would automatically activate the remaining matches.
The governing body also clarified that the punishment already includes a provisional one-match suspension the player served during the February 25, 2026 fixture between Benfica and Real Madrid.

In a further step, UEFA has asked FIFA to enforce the ban worldwide. If approved, Prestianni would be sidelined not only in European competitions but also in domestic league matches and potential international appearances for Argentina until the active portion of the suspension is completed.

The case underscores UEFA’s increasingly strict stance on discriminatory behavior, with authorities aiming to ensure consistent enforcement across all levels of the game.
