Atlético Madrid secured a commanding 2–0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return fixture.Despite Barcelona controlling large parts of the game early on, the match turned just before halftime. Pau Cubarsí was initially cautioned for bringing down Giuliano Simeone during a clear scoring opportunity, but after a VAR review, the referee upgraded the decision to a red card, leaving the hosts with ten men.

From the resulting free-kick, Julián Álvarez opened the scoring with a precise strike that beat the goalkeeper.

Barcelona showed resilience after the break and created several chances, coming closest through Marcus Rashford, whose free-kick effort struck the crossbar. However, their numerical disadvantage proved costly.

Atlético extended their lead in the second half when Alexander Sørloth finished calmly from a low delivery into the box, sealing an important away win.

The result ends Atlético’s long wait for a victory at Barcelona’s home ground and gives them a significant advantage going into the second leg in Madrid. Barcelona now face a difficult task if they are to overturn the deficit and progress to the semi-finals.
