The Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Adewale Adeniyi, has been unveiled as one of Nigeria’s ambassadors for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The ambassadorial team, comprising of seasoned stakeholders, athletes, and sports administrators, aims to provide strategic direction and support for Nigeria’s participation in the Games, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026

CGC Wale Adeniyi, expressed strong support for Team Nigeria’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following his unveiling as one of the country’s official ambassadors by the National Sports Commission.

The announcement, reflects a strategic move to galvanise national support for the Games by bringing together a distinguished group of administrators, elite athletes, and key stakeholders.

The inclusion of the CGC in the ambassadorial team underscores the growing intersection between public institutions and national sporting development, positioning the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as a critical partner in advancing Nigeria’s global sporting aspirations.

The ambassadorial team comprises seasoned stakeholders and sports administrators, including Mallam Saleh Ahmadu, Dr Amos Adamu, Chief Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye, all of whom have previously served in leadership capacities at the National Sports Commission. Their collective experience is expected to provide strategic direction and institutional memory in shaping Nigeria’s participation at the Games.

Also named on the team are accomplished former athletes, including Olympic medalist Daniel Igali and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu, as well as other stakeholders and private-sector representatives. This blend of technical expertise and athlete representation highlights a deliberate effort to foster inclusivity, credibility, and performance-driven preparation.

Speaking on the development, the Comptroller-General commended the initiative, noting that sports remain a powerful tool for national unity, youth engagement, and international visibility. He emphasised the importance of coordinated stakeholder involvement in ensuring that Team Nigeria is adequately prepared to compete at the highest level.

“The success of Team Nigeria will depend not only on the athletes but on the strength of the support system around them. This ambassadorial initiative is a step in the right direction towards building that collective responsibility,” he stated.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026, will bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in a streamlined programme of sports, including athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, with full integration of para-sports.
