Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash, with Federico Valverde producing a stunning first-half hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Madrid took a huge step toward the quarter-finals thanks to an outstanding display from Valverde, who scored three goals in just 22 minutes during the opening half. The Spanish side managed the feat despite the absence of injured star Kylian Mbappé.
Manchester City began the match brightly and dominated possession in the early stages, but it was Madrid who struck first against the run of play. A long clearance from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois caught defender Nico O’Reilly off guard, allowing Valverde to break through, round Gianluigi Donnarumma and calmly slot the ball into the net.
Seven minutes later, Valverde doubled Madrid’s advantage. A deflected pass from Vinícius Júnior fell kindly into his path, and the Uruguayan midfielder drilled a powerful left-footed shot past Donnarumma.
Valverde completed his remarkable hat-trick shortly afterwards. Former City player Brahim Díaz delivered a delicate chipped pass into the box, which Valverde expertly controlled before volleying home from close range after lifting the ball over Marc Guéhi.
Madrid nearly extended their lead early in the second half when Vinícius earned a penalty after being fouled in the box by Donnarumma. However, the Brazilian’s spot-kick lacked power and was comfortably saved by the City goalkeeper.
City attempted to respond, but Madrid’s defence held firm. Courtois produced several important saves, helping the hosts maintain their clean sheet after a brief defensive lapse involving young defender Thiago Pitarch, the youngest Spanish player to start a Champions League knockout match for Madrid.
Valverde’s performance was historic. He became only the second player to score a first-half hat-trick against an English club in the Champions League, matching the feat achieved by Lionel Messi for FC Barcelona against Arsenal in 2010.
Remarkably, the three goals also equalled Valverde’s entire Champions League scoring record from his previous 75 appearances in the competition.
Beyond the goals, the Uruguayan dominated the game statistically. He led Madrid in chances created (two), dribbles attempted (seven), successful dribbles (four), duels contested (17) and duels won (11).
Although Manchester City enjoyed nearly 60% possession, they struggled to create clear opportunities, producing chances worth just 0.56 expected goals. In contrast, Madrid were ruthless on the counterattack, registering 12 shots — seven on target — with a combined expected goals value of 2.59.
City now face a daunting task in the second leg if they hope to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the quarter-finals.
