The paramount ruler of the Idoma nation, in Benue State, His Royal Majesty (HRM), Agaba’idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, has formally accepted his appointment as National Patron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

He accepted the appointment when the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), led by the SWAN President, Isaiah Benjamin, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Otukpo.

Adegbe Uloko, Secretary, Idoma Area Traditional Council, who disclosed this in a statement to newsmen in Makurdi on Sunday, noted that the Ochi’Idoma, expressed appreciation to the SWAN leadership and commended the sports body for its contributions to the promotion of sports, youth development, and national unity that spans over six decades.

He charged SWAN, to strengthen its advocacy for grassroots sports development, youth mentorship, ethical journalism, and policy reforms that would enhance athlete welfare and sports administration in Nigeria.

The traditional ruler who described sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and nation-building, stated that the media plays a critical role in shaping values, inspiring excellence, and preserving Nigeria’s sporting heritage.

The Ochi’Idoma subsequently said, “I accept this appointment not merely as an honour, but as a responsibility to support initiatives that promote unity, discipline, and excellence through sports and the media.”

Furthermore, he encouraged closer collaboration between sports journalists and traditional institutions as a means of mobilizing communities and fostering peace through sports.

Earlier, the SWAN President, Isaiah Benjamin, said the decision to appoint the Och’Idoma as National Patron was informed by his commitment to peace, youth empowerment, and national development, noting that the Association looks forward to benefiting from the royal father’s wealth of experience, moral authority, and leadership.

The visit climaxed with the presentation of a formal letter of appointment to the royal father.

The SWAN reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, responsible journalism, and the use of sports as a vehicle for positive social change across the country. ##
