Manchester City capitalised on Arsenal’s latest stumble to cut the gap at the top of the Premier League to just two points, dispatching Sunderland 3–0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After watching Arsenal fall 2–1 at Aston Villa earlier in the day, Pep Guardiola’s men approached this fixture knowing an opportunity had opened — and they seized it with complete authority, helped by moments of individual brilliance from Rayan Cherki.
The defining highlight came in the 65th minute. Cherki toyed with Omar Alderete on the right side of the box, sitting the defender down before delivering a stunning rabona cross. Phil Foden met it with a deft header that clipped the underside of the bar on its way in, sealing the win and underlining City’s dominance.
By then, the champions were already firmly in control thanks to two goals from their centre-backs in the first half. Dias opened the scoring on 31 minutes with a fierce 25-yard strike that deflected off Dan Ballard and wrong-footed goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. Just four minutes later, Gvardiol made it 2–0, timing his run perfectly to nod Foden’s whipped corner into the far corner.
Sunderland began the second half with intent and carved out their best chances of the afternoon. Donnarumma had to bail City out after Dias misjudged a clearance, producing a strong one-on-one stop to deny Wilson Isidor. Minutes later, Granit Xhaka rattled the woodwork with a crisp half-volley from the edge of the area.
However, any hint of a revival evaporated once Foden struck, and the visitors’ frustrations boiled over deep into stoppage time. Substitute Luke O’Nien, introduced in the 88th minute, launched into a reckless challenge on Matheus Nunes and received a straight red. His dismissal means he will miss next weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby — the first in the Premier League since 2016 — when Newcastle visit the Stadium of Light.
While Cherki’s two assists will capture plenty of attention, Foden once again showcased his growing influence, registering two goal involvements to continue a superb run of form. The England international has now contributed to nine goals in his last seven starts across all competitions — seven goals and two assists — the highest tally of any Premier League player over that period.
This also marks the first time Foden has scored in three consecutive matches since November 2023.
City’s superiority was reflected in the numbers: they produced 18 shots with an xG of 2.31, while restricting Sunderland to eight attempts and 0.74 xG. The champions have now won 25 of their last 27 league games against newly promoted sides, a dominant streak dating back to their defeat to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in April 2021.
It was a performance full of control, quality and ruthlessness — one that keeps the title race finely poised as the season gathers pace.
