Former England football captain David Beckham according to Reuters has been officially knighted by King Charles III at a ceremony held on Tuesday at Windsor Castle, marking decades of his influence in both professional sport and philanthropic initiatives.
At 50, Beckham joined the ranks of distinguished Britons honoured for their service, more than two decades after he first received royal recognition for his achievements on the football field.
Dressed in an elegant suit designed by his wife, Victoria Beckham—renowned fashion designer and former member of the pop group Spice Girls—the global icon attended the investiture accompanied by family members.
The Emotions at Windsor
During the ceremony, Beckham shared a warm exchange with the King, both smiling as they conversed briefly. Speaking afterwards, the football legend admitted that the news of his knighthood had moved him to tears.
“This is a truly special day for me and my family,” Beckham told reporters outside Windsor Castle. “To stand here after starting out as a boy from East London who dreamed of playing football—it’s beyond anything I could have imagined. It’s one of those moments that simply doesn’t get any better.”
He joked that his children might now address him as ‘Sir Dad’, adding that he felt deeply honoured to receive one of the nation’s highest titles.

Born and raised in East London, Beckham joined Manchester United as a youth player before making his Premier League debut in 1995. Over the following years, he helped the club claim six league championships, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League title.
His career later spanned several international clubs, including Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. Beckham retired from professional football in 2013 after earning 115 caps for England, making him one of the most capped outfield players in the nation’s history.

Since 2005, he has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. “I was raised in a family that deeply admired the royal tradition,” Beckham once said in an interview. “My grandparents would have been proud to see me honouring the Queen in that way.”
Over the years, he has also been a guest at key royal occasions, including the weddings of both Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011 and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.
