A Full Circle Moment: Jose Mourinho Returns to Benfica 25 Years Later

Jose Mourinho is back where he started – Benfica! After 25 long years, the 62-year-old Portuguese legend has been reappointed as the manager of Benfica, signing a two-year deal that runs until June 2027. This move comes just two days after Benfica parted ways with former Wolves boss Bruno Lage, who was sacked following a shocking 3-2 Champions League defeat to Qarabag.

Mourinho’s first stint at Benfica was brief, lasting only three months in 2000. However, he has now returned to the club where his managerial journey began, with a renewed sense of purpose. “I’m more altruistic, less self-centered, I think less about myself and more about the good I can do for others,” Mourinho said, highlighting his growth as a person and a coach.

With Mourinho at the helm, Benfica fans are expecting big things. His reputation for discipline, tactical mastery, and big-match mentality could give the club an edge in the Primeira Liga and on the European stage. Benfica’s immediate challenges include a Champions League group stage clash against Chelsea on September 30 and a league match against AVS on Saturday.

Mourinho’s contract includes a break clause that allows either party to end the deal 10 days after the 2025-26 season ends. This suggests that Benfica is committed to giving Mourinho time to work his magic, but also has an exit strategy if needed
