Kylian Mbappe rescued a point for Real Madrid in a tense rivalry match against city rivals Atletico Madrid to maintain top of La Liga.
Diego Simeone’s side had gone in front through a controversial 35th-minute penalty. The referee pointed to the spot after going to the video assistant referee (VAR) monitor as Aurelien Tchouameni was adjudged to have fouled Samuel Lino. Then Julian Alvarez converted it with a unique style, taking it from the spot, chipping the ball down the middle giving Thibaut Courtois no chance as he dived past swiftly.
Five minutes after the break, Mbappe rocketed his 16th league goal of the season with the quickest reaction on goal after Jude Bellingham’s shot bounced into his spot behind Judge Bellingham.
Atletico Madrid emerged a point clear of second-placed, with Barcelona five points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s side who remained the leaders ahead of all with 50 points.
Although Real Madrid have won 12 points from losing positions in La Liga this season, only Atletico Madrid (16) have recovered more.
Meanwhile, optimistic Barca would want to close the gap on Sunday evening against Sevilla.
Real Madrid targets Champions League, as they will travel to Manchester City for the first leg of the knockout phase play-offs.
Real Madrid so far, has been strong to maintain a place in Champions League even in the absence of key defenders due to injuries.
