Bwari and Kuje Area Councils are conspicuously absent, having failed to enter teams for the 2024 edition of the FCT Inter Area Councils cadet handball championships, for Under-12 and Under-15 Boys and Girls.
Nonetheless, the competition threw off on Tuesday morning, with the other four Area Councils – Abuja Municipal, Abaji, Kwali, and Gwagwalada fielding in teams.
Monday was marked out as arrival date, and the organizers took time to screen the players, before they were camped at the hostel facility located at the Old Parade Ground, Complex in Area 10, Garki, Abuja; venue of all the games, including the finals, on Thursday, May 30th, 2024.
Meanwhile, a couple of partners have weighed in their support for the successful organization of the on-going cadet handball championships in Abuja.
One of them, Hand2Hand Sports Foundation which fully kitted the teams and sponsored the competition last year, has given out match balls for the ongoing tournaments, with a promise to give eight of the top players, scholarships.
President of Hand2Hand Foundation, Richard Agbonifo who broke the news, said two of the best players in each of the four categories; that’s U-12 Boys and Girls, and U-15 Boys and Girls will be enrolled into the Academic Scholarships of the foundation.
Agbonifo also reserved special praise for the Organizing Secretary of the FCT Handball Association, Mrs. Hulda Nkwocha for keeping the catch them young programme going, despite paucity of funds, and urged others to weigh in their support for handball to continue to grow in FCT and Nigeria at large.
Another big partnership is courtesy Mr Jibril Saidu, the representative of North Central Zone on the board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN); while a private individual, who has also supported the organizers with cash, pleased not to be mentioned by name.
