The Benue State Command of the Nigeria Police has arrested a 40 year-old man for raping an 8 months pregnant woman in Irabi Council Ward of Obi Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state.
SportsDay gathered that the incident took place at about 7pm last Wednesday.
The man, Mr Akpo, a commercial motorcyclist who hails from Itogo council ward of Obi LGA had picked the woman on her way home from the market, but ended up diverting her to a bush path.
He had then raped the 25 year-old pregnant woman (names withheld) and abandoned her in her state of unconsciousness.
The man who had thought the woman was dead, dragged her and left her by a river bank and fled.
Competent sources told our Correspondent that “The woman was going home from the market. She flagged down an okada man (Akpo) and bargained with him to take her home.
“So on their way home, the okada man diverted from the main road to a nearby bush, held her down and raped her.
“As he was raping her, the woman became unconscious and the bike man, thinking that the woman was dead, dragged her and dumped her by a river bank where she laid till the next day (last Thursday).
“In the morning, she woke up and discovered herself in a state of subconsciousness and was too weak to stand. So she laid down praying and hoping that help will come.”
The source further explained that the lady was still lying by the river bank, when the search party organised to search for her came across her; took her to the hospital and reported the case to the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command, Sewuese Anene who confirmed the incident to SportsDay on Thursday said the suspect has since been taken into police custody.###
