    2030 Commonwealth Games Hosting Bid Heats Up: Countries Vie for Top Spot

    Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has taken a significant step forward with a delegation led by National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko,NSC DG Hon. Bukula Olapade, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President and Intentional Olympic Commitee (IOC) Executive Committee Member Engr. Habu Gumel, NOC Vice President ,Dr Solomon Ogba, NOC Secretary General Mr. Tunde Popoola and other experts, strategist and advisors from the NSC visited the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) office in London on Tuesday August 12,2025.

    The team, comprising key stakeholders from the NSC and NOC, engaged in a collaborative meeting to discuss Nigeria’s Expression of Interest (EOI), outline the country’s vision for hosting the Games.

    Key Highlights of the Meeting:

    Presentation of Nigeria’s Vision: The delegation presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s bold reforms, restructuring, and resetting efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting positive achievements in sports and socio-economic development.Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) Framework: The NSC emphasized the significance of hosting the Commonwealth Games in driving sports and economic development, aligning with the RHINSE framework’s objectives to create wealth across various pillars, including:

    – Sports Wealth: Enhancing sports infrastructure and promoting athletic excellence.

    – Diplomatic Wealth:  Fostering international relations and cooperation.

    – Economic Wealth: Stimulating economic growth through tourism and job creation.

    – Cultural Wealth: Showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

    – Social Wealth: Promoting national unity and social development

    – Next Steps: Pending final approval and ratification from the President. The CGF is expected to announce the final decision.

    Potential Impact of Hosting the Commonwealth Games:

    – National Unity and Pride: The Commonwealth Games can unite the nation and foster a sense of national pride.

    – Economic Growth: The event can stimulate economic growth through increased tourism, job creation, and infrastructure development.

    .- Sports Development: Hosting the Games can accelerate sports development, inspire a new generation of athletes, and promote a culture of sportsmanship and healthy living.

    With the final bid submission deadline, Nigeria is poised to showcase its capabilities and commitment to hosting a successful Commonwealth Games.

    The outcome will depend on the country’s ability to demonstrate its capacity to deliver a world-class event while ensuring sustainable development and equitable benefits for all stakeholders .
